The Chickenpox Test (Varicella Titer Test) can confirm if you’ve ever been infected with varicella zoster virus (VZV). VZV infection can cause both varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). After you have chickenpox, the virus stays inactive in your body and can reactivate as shingles later in life. This test identifies antibodies that your immune system produced in response to an VZV infection. If you need to determine the vaccination status for yourself or your child, please contact your healthcare provider.

This Chickenpox Test may be right if you or your child are:

  • Unsure if you’ve had chickenpox or shingles in the past
  • Attending a school or working at a job that requires proof of immunity from previous VZV infection from chickenpox or shingles

This test is not right if you or your child are:

  • Sick and want to confirm an active chickenpox or shingles VZV infection
  • Interested in proof of immunity from chickenpox or shingles vaccination
