  Lead Test

  The Lead Test measures the blood levels of lead through a venipuncture draw (a needle is used to draw blood from a vein). Lead is a toxic metal that can damage the brain, organs, and nervous system. Children are at particular risk of being harmed from lead exposure because their bodies are developing rapidly and able to absorb lead more easily than older children and adults. Further, young children have increased exposure to lead due to crawling on surfaces and repeatedly putting their hands and other items in their mouths. Any lead exposure can cause harm in children. Symptoms of lead exposure may include weakness, a decrease in the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells (anemia), nausea, headaches, fatigue, and additional symptoms. While the most common sources of lead exposure are lead-based paint and contaminated dust in older buildings, exposure can also come from contaminated air, water, and soil. This test may be appropriate for those who:

  • Are 12 months of age and have not received screening at least once before^a,b
  • Have never checked their lead levels or haven't been checked in several years
  • May have been exposed to lead or live with a family member who was exposed to lead

  Glucose Level Blood Test

  The Hemoglobin A1c test is the most widely used test to measure blood sugar levels over time. It identifies average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2-3 months, so you can track your progress in managing your diabetes. Glucose blood levels are tightly controlled by hormones like insulin produced by the pancreas. Consistently high blood glucose is typically seen in individuals with uncontrolled or undiagnosed diabetes. In people with diabetes, insulin is either less effective or not produced in sufficient quantity, thus making it harder to manage the amount of sugar passing through the blood. This test is used to help diagnose conditions that result in too much sugar in the blood, such as diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes. Common signs of high blood sugar levels include increased thirst, increased hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, blurry vision, darkened areas of the folds in the skin (often found in the armpits, groin, and/or neck), and weight loss. This test may be appropriate for those who are looking to manage their diabetes or prediabetes or those at higher risk for developing insulin resistance. You may also consider this test if you are overweight or obese, and/or have certain risk factors, including if you:

  • Are age 35 or older
  • Are of American Indian, African American, Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander race or ethnicity
  • Have a family history (parent or sibling) of Type 2 diabetes
  • Have a history of heart disease or stroke
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have low HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and/or high triglyceride level
  • Are physically inactive
  • Have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Have a history of gestational diabetes
  • Are living with HIV
